It’s June!

It may still technically be Spring, but these blazing temperatures make it seem like summer is already here. Cool down with some of these exciting community events around Southern California this month.

June 1-13. Hero Art Exhibition at the Orange County Great Park. For Anime and Manga fans, the Hero Art Exhibition will showcase different artworks through different mediums: digital arts, sculpt modeling, 3D design, printing technologies, and traditional mediums such as acrylics and ink. The exhibition will be in the Palm Arts Complex and is free to all visitors.

June 5. John Waters at the New Beverly Cinema. Last year, the legendary director of “Hairspray” and “Cry-Baby” hitchhiked from Baltimore to San Francisco armed only with a cardboard sign reading “I’m Not Psycho.” He took the stories from the trip and wrote “Carsick.” Buy a copy and get it signed at this event hosted by Book Soup.

June 7. The Spark Run at the Pomona Fairplex. The Spark Run will offer participants a unique, visual and audio 5K experience with fantastic light installations, music from dance music by DJ Kaskade, and a huge after party with a live performance by Kaskade. The event is open to participants of all ages and officially begins at 7:45 pm. Participants will have the opportunity to enjoy food and festivities from 6:00 pm.

June 7. Make Music Pasadena in Downtown Pasadena. Come to this all day music festival on the streets of Pasadena, and for a $5 suggested donation see national acts like Tennis and Surfer Blood along with up-and-coming local talent including Dawn of Sequins and So Many Wizards. June 14. Touch a Truck at the Santa Clarita Central Park. If you’ve dreamt of putting your grimy little hands all over a collection of really nice trucks, then this is the event for you. For only five dollars, you can touch military trucks, a fire truck, and law enforcement vehicles. There is also face painting.

June 21-26. J Leadership Camp at Pepperdine University. The Korea Daily is hosting leadership camp to teach middle and high school students to make their voices heard with online journalism. Guest speakers include Angry Asian Man’s Phil Yu and the Santa Clarita Valley Signal’s Alesia Humphries. Register now; space is limited! http://leadership-camp.com.

June 22. “The Ghost of Gershwin” in North Hollywood. Come to the closing night of this new hit musical, about a brilliant composer who is haunted by the music of George Gershwin, at the Lonny Chapman Theater at 10900 Burbank Blvd. The show features original music written by Wayland Pickard and Laura Manning.

June 25. “Halfway to Christmas Day” at Angel Stadium. It’s Christmas in June as the Angels play the Minnesota Twins. Go to the game to help the Angels set the Guinness World Record for most Santa hats worn in one place at one time.

June 27-29. BET Experience at LA Live. During his three-day celebration of hip hop and soul, the likes of A$AP Rocky and Trey Songz team with classic artists like Jill Scott, Outkast, and Mary J. Blige for performances at the Staples Center, while the Roots, DJ Khaled, and a set of all star comedians hold down Club Nokia. Day Three includes the 2014 BET Awards.

June 27-30. “Thumbelina” at Glendale Community College. Back by popular demand, this weekend is your final chance to catch this production of Thumbelina performed by the California Contemporary Ballet. Come share the adventures of this tiny girl as she travels through a wild world.
