“Every Day” is a book that makes people ask “what if,” “how,” and “why.” In “Every Day” by David Leviathan, a teenager (maybe a girl, or maybe a boy) named A. has a unique, yet interesting, life. A. does not have an identity. At 12 PM every night, A. is ripped from the body of one to be put in another. A. wakes up every day in a different body, with different expectations, and different plans–none of which are personally his. He’s been in various bodies, from that of a blind girl to that of the most obese boy in the world. However, when he finds himself in Justin’s body and gets acquainted with his girlfriend, Rihannon, everything changes.
In “Every Day,” because every day is a different life, the chapters are enumerated from day 5994 to day 6032. When A. finds himself/herself in the body of a new person, he normally tries to stick to his or her daily routine, then leave quietly without leaving a trail. But after A. falls in love with Rihannon when he’s in Justin’s body for a day, A. will do anything in other bodies, and is even willing to violate what their beliefs or hobbies, if it means he can see Rihannon. However, A. soon makes a critical mistake when he takes the body of Nathan, a typical nerd, to an alcoholic party that he would never go to normally to see Rihannon, then loses track of time, and at 12 PM, A. is no longer around, and instead an innocent and lost Nathan is left in the middle of the street with no idea what happened. That’s not all — A. also leaves his email open on Nathan’s computer.
Soon Nathan’s story begins to get around, and Rihannon realizes A. is not Nathan, as she thought he was, and the emails she’d been receiving have been from someone she didn’t know. A. meets up with her in the body of a cheerleader, and explains his dilemma. Although Rihannon finds it hard to believe, she eventually finds herself caving in, and falling in love with him too.
“Every Day” is a book that knows no limits, and makes even the most impossible of ideas feel real. Read the book to find out what the most complicated of relationships can look like, sneak a peek into the different lives of people, and see how A. manages to cope with it all.
