In our world today, technology continues to move forward with new inventions sparked by creative thinking and new designs. Companies are in competition with each other, trying to outthink one another in order to attract more customers. This is the case between Apple and Samsung, with Samsung continuously adding on to its Galaxy phones that rival with Apple’s iPhones. Recently, Apple introduced its next generation iPhone, the iPhone 5. Pre-orders are currently being taken, with the first official over-the-counter sales to be available on September 21.
The new iPhone 5 comes with updated features, including a thinner and lighter model, ultrafast wireless, and a new A6 chip that allows performance and graphics to be twice as fast. The new iPhone measures a mere 7.6 millimeters thin and weighs just 112 grams, which is 18% thinner and 20% lighter than the model right before it, the iPhone 4S. LTE technology is made for speed yet drains battery life. However, Apple adjusted this feature in order for it to be fast with wireless connectivity and be power efficient. The new A6 chip is designed to make just about anything you do on the iPhone 5 noticeably faster, including launching apps, watching movies, and opening the web. The new iPhone 5 also comes with the new “EarPods”, which are new earphones that represent a new look from the traditional Apple earphone that came out before.
“I think the introduction of this new iPhone is great,” said Albert Woo, freshman at Whitney High. “All these new elements that they put in with this new iPhone makes it completely different from all the other ones before.”
Although noticeable changes were made, it is still unclear whether the iPhone 5 will provide competition for Samsung’s Galaxy cell phones. With the rate of success that Samsung is experiencing with its Galaxy cell phones, many people are starting to want to see new versions of the Apple iPhone.
“To me, all the iPhones are the same,” said Jimmy Lee, junior at Cerritos High. “Each version is supposed to be an advanced model but they’re not significantly different, and I wish Apple would start implementing newer ideas and features.”
This could continue to be an interesting race, allowing us to see the path Apple will take to continue to achieve success after the death of its co-founder Steve Jobs.
